The name “Denim & Pearls” has more to do with the atmosphere, and the feeling we wanted our guests to get when they walk through our doors, than about the food we serve. The term “upscale casual” has been adapted by countless restaurants in the last 10 years. We wanted to find another way to convey that message. We want our guests to dress up if they want to or come in shorts and a t shirt. We want them to think of us for their anniversary and special occasions or because it’s Tuesday and they don’t want to cook. It sounds crazy to say you can get a great Italian meal at a place called “Denim & Pearls”. We also think the name reflects being out in the “country” of northern Virginia.
The actual name is from a Country Song, by Drake White, “Making Me Look Good Again”. There’s a line in the song that goes “leather and lace, denim and pearls, whiskey and wine”. The “denim and pearls” part just stuck with me.
We started with our cow hide barstools and went from there.
The food is “Italian-American” and more specifically “New York” Italian. Many of our dishes are from family recipes that are over 100 years old and reflect the passion that has been passed down for generations.
It all started with “Grandma Joan’s” meatballs. Sunday afternoons I would sit and wait for the clock to hit 3pm (dinner time). The smell of Grandma “frying” the meatballs is something I will never forget. When we got the opportunity to open a restaurant I knew the meatballs were going to be the first thing we put on the menu. It took weeks before I got the recipe just right (Grandma says they’re Ok) and the rest history.
We hope you can taste the pride and passion we put into each of our dishes. More importantly, we hope we’re making Grandma proud. Mostly because she’s only a few hours away and she will come down here to set us straight!!!
